Chrome Bookmarks Sorter

(10-Apr-2009) Application has been featured on Lifehacker.  Welcome Lifehackers!

(10-Apr-2009) Whoops: The build process failed to bundle the right assemblies with the exe… so I’ve attached an updated version, below.  If you had an error when trying to run this, please re-download!

I’ve had this one sat on my hard-drive for a while now, it’s a simple utility that sorts Chrome’s bookmarks by user-selected parameters.  In a recent development build of Chrome, the developers added a “Reorder by title” option to the Bookmark Manager, but it doesn’t sort recursively, and only allows the one option.  So, here’s something a little more.

I make no guarantees for it working, provide no warranties, or anything.  If it screws up your computer, or whatever, I’m not responsible.  This is strictly “it works fine on my machine”-software!

Simply run the application, sort your bookmarks, and re-start Chrome.  Requires .NET Framework v3.5.

hey I just saw that your application’s system requirements says it can run on Windows 2000, but Windows 2000 can’t run Google Chrome, or have you found a way for it to run on Windows 2000?

  7. James says:

Whoops, I shouldn’t have left that on there. I’ll remove it from the readme if I release another version. Sorry for getting your hopes up!

  8. George says:

When I sort all bookmarks are duplicated. I have tried 3 times, reverting to the unsorted backup each time. Using latest non-dev build of Chrome & Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    George

  9. James says:

    Hi George,

I’ve not tested on a 64-bit system, as I don’t have access to one at the present time. I’ve not experienced any similar issues in my testing - and I’ve not had any similar problems reported. I don’t know what could be causing the issue, but when I have some time I’ll take a look at the program and see if I can find the reason for the problem (though, I don’t know how soon that will be)!

Sorry I can’t be much more help than that.

I have used this on various occaisions on Windows 7 64-bit, without problems. I am using the latest beta of Google Chrome (selecting using the Google Channels switcher, middle option)

  11. James says:

Well, thanks very much for clearing that up, neenee. I can’t see anything inherently obvious in the program itself that would cause duplication. Will have to keep thinking!

There were two things I didn’t like, so far, and was going back to IE. Then you came along w/Chrome Bookmark Sorter. One down and one to go (Auto-Fill). Chrome Bookmark Sorter works magnificently! Easy and fast!

James, please help! I installed the program on my computer and it removed all my bookmarklets from the chrome bookmark bar! please email me since I can’t contact you from your contact page. thanks!

    Hi Steve,

I’ve not had any other similar problems reported to me with the application. Did you ensure you closed Chrome before sorting the bookmarks? What version of Chrome are you running? I haven’t actively updated the program since the day of release, but it still appears to work for me (running the latest version on the Developer branch).

  16. Hi James,

I really appreciate your utility. I have two questions:
    1. What language did you write it in?
    2. Have you ever thought of a feature (or another app) that also checks whether the bookmark still exists?

    Thanks a lot,

    Richard

  17. Stephen says:

I have downloaded your program many times. I have yet to find where it hangs out. I would appreciate some direction regarding this. I run Windows XP Pro with the most up to date version of Chrome. Your program would seem to be a boon to Chrome bookmarking.
    Thanks

  18. Stephen says:

I would like to try your program, but am unable to install it after download, Some questions; Where does it reside on my computer? How do I uninstall it. Having read the reviews, I look forward to a solution to this issue.
    Sincerely,
    Stephen

  19. James says:

Richard - C#. I have no real plans to add extra features, or to develop any other similar applications, sorry! :)

Stephen - no installation is required, simply run the EXE within the zip file.

Bookmark sorter does not work with Beta 6, any idea why?

  21. James says:

Hi Steve. I haven’t worked on, or tested this project in well over a year! If you can give me any information regarding any errors you receive, or just some details of what happens (e.g. Does it do *anything*? Does it corrupt bookmarks?), if it’s a simple fix, I’ll try and do it :)

  22. Steve1209 says:

    Hi James,

I think I figured out why your bookmark sorter program stopped working. In chrome I set up the option to sync bookmarks between computers I might log on to, I think the way they do that it keep a copy of the bookmarks on a server somewhere, so you no longer have a local copy of bookmarks. As soon as I un checked that option, the sorter again worked.

Sorry for sounding off too soon, your sorter works great now as it always has,

    Steve

  23. James says:

    Hey Steve,

Well, that’s certainly an interesting point to note! If only they’d bother to implement proper sorting in Chrome itself, there wouldn’t be an issue at all! Glad to hear the program’s still firing (correctly) on all cylinders!

    Cheers,
    James

  24. Steve1209 says:

    James,

I agree 100% about Chrome sorting bookmarks. I now have the new DEV version installed which is now version 7 already, there is still no bookmark sorting. As good as Google is, stupid ass IE has a sort feature, one would think, Google would have that & something better oh well, I have your sorter working perfectly again!

    Thanks again,
    Steve
